1.1 General Information

Ammonium hydroxide (NH 4).

Ammonium hydroxide is a product of the dissolution of Anhydrous Ammonia (NH3 – gas) in water at varying concentrations, depending on the usage of the product.

It has the following chemical reaction:

NH4OH = NH3 + H20

This reaction is extremely exothermic and reversible. It is a colorless liquid with a strong characteristic odor of Anhydrous Ammonia, produces white fumes when in contact with hydrochloric acid. It is treated similarly to Anhydrous Ammonia in the matters of Occupational Toxicology.

2.1 Hazardous Data

Typical content L.P.O .: 46.8 ppm limit

Trihydride Nitrogen (NH3) 24, 25, 26 and 29 PP: 0.5 mg / l of nitrogen Water (H20) 76, 75, 74 and 74 LT: Brazil – 30 ppm Value CEILING.

2.2 Specific conditions

As Ammonia Hydroxide reaction is highly reversible, reactivity data is the same as Anhydrous Ammonia (NH3).

  1. a) Stability / Polymerization: Anhydrous Ammonia is stable when stored and used under normal conditions of storage and handling. Above 450 ° C can decompose releasing nitrogen and hydrogen, not occuring polymerization.
  2. b) Chemical Incompatibility: It is an alkaline solution that gives off heat when it reacts with acid. In contact with halogens, boron, 1,2-dichloroethane, ethylene oxide, platinum, nitrogen triclorato can strong oxidizers and can cause potentially violent, or explosive reactions. In contact with heavy metals and their compounds may form explosive products, contact with chlorine and its compounds may result in the release of chloramine gas. Ammonia produces significant explosive mixture when in contact with hydrocarbons. The product is also incompatible with acetic aldehyde, acrolein, hydrazine, potassium ferrocyanide.

Hazardous Decomposition Products: NH3 thermal decomposition can produce toxic nitrous gases.

The storage temperature is similar to the environment for Anhydrous Ammonia; presenting low temperature ambient pressure. It is usually stored in plastic packaging drums and / or plastic containers (containers) or carbon or stainless steel tank cars. In containers, transport should not be carried in trucks or closed vans. It is stable during transport if there is no prolonged exposure to the sun.

The information mentioned above refer to the synthesis of our knowledge and our experience with the ammonia product. Such information shall apply to the pure form of the product, according to specifications. The handler, in the case of combinations or mixtures, should make sure that they will not generate any new risk. The handler must respect – regardless of the information provided – the number of legislative, regulatory and administrative texts related to the product, hygiene and labor protection.
